Pre-Con - Photographing Utah's Wild Horses

Spend a day photographing the Onaqui wild horse herds of the west Utah desert with Ted York. Meet Ted near Vernon where we will transfer into Ted’s vehicle before heading out to the desert in search of the Mustangs.
Ted will talk about techniques, what makes a good mustang image, and what it takes to get good images. We will spend 1 to 5 hours searching for and photographing the animals before returning to your vehicles. We’ll talk about techniques, etiquette, risks, safety, horse behavior, camera setup, philosophy, etc.
Time permitting we’ll visit a small elk ranch on the way back.
Needed tools:
- Camera
- Medium to long telephoto lenses in the ranges listed below -
- 24-105mm
- 70-200mm
- 100-500mm
- Tripod.
- Probably won't be used for horses, but is nice to have incase of other things to photograph along the way
- Appropriate clothing
- Boots or hiking shoes, though tennis shoes will work.
- Warm clothes, as November will probably be cold all day
- Be aware things can get quite dusty.

A couple of years ago Ted began a self-assignment to photograph wild horses from the Onaqui herds in the west deserts of Utah. After watching hundreds of them stampede across the old Pony Express Road near Simpson Springs he pulled off the road and headed into the middle of the herd to capture the Mustangs on camera. That started a love affair with the animals. He has since spent many hours creating images of the equines.
In 2021 his IPC competition image, “This Ain’t No Horseplay” was selected to compete in the 2022 World Photographic Cup. He joined Team America and went on to receive a gold medal in reportage for the image of two fighting stallions. That win helped the US to pull off a historical tie with Mexico for the cup.
Ted joined the IPPA in 2005, a couple of weeks after his retirement from Delta Air Lines and has been active in the organization for the past 18 years, and served as president in 2018. He is also a member of the PPA and ASP.
Ted earned his PPA Masters and Craftsman degree and is certified. Ted has been awarded numerous “Photographer of the Year” awards over the past 17 years at both the local, regional, and national level. He has a passion for all things photography and loves helping others as well as learning from others.
